Russell Crowe is ‘hopeful’ for Gladiator sequel – despite being killed off in first film

Russell Crowe has spoken out about the much-desired Gladiator sequel – to be set 25 to 30 years after the first – and the possibility of him returning to the story.

Remember, his character Maximum dies in a rather dramatic fashion in Ridley Scott’s original 2000 film… ‘I keep being like this sort of party pooper when I say, I just wanted to remind you I died in the first one,’ Russell said. ‘So, I don’t really know. This far away, could we play with that? We could…’ Please note: that’s not a no. He also told E! News: ‘I can tell you those conversations [of a sequel] have been going on since the last day of shooting.

'There’s been a lot of different ideas of approaching things.’ The 56-year-old won the best actor Oscar for the film in 2001.

Gladiator won five Oscars back in 2001, including best picture

Speaking about its lasting legacy, he said: ‘To have a film in your career where 20 years after, doesn’t matter what day of the week it is, somewhere in the world it’s still playing on primetime TV… ‘It’s amazing. We certainly, when we were making it, we never would have expected it to have the legs that it had. In fact, while we were making it, it was chaos.’

Russell has previously admitted the first script for Gladiator was ‘so bad’ saying on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon: ‘The producer didn’t know I’d actually already been able to get a copy but the thing he said is “I don’t want to send you the document we have, because you won’t respond to it”.’

Ridley’s other directing credits include Blade Runner, Alien and The Martian, while Russell went on to star in A Beautiful Mind and Robin Hood.
