A three-year-old boy was rushed to hospital after a freak accident left his eye pierced with a screw.

The child was watching his dad use a petrol-powered handheld grass cutter slung over his shoulder in Khon Kaen, northeastern Thailand on Monday evening. But while the father moved around the garden the blades zipped over a small, one-inch long metal screw.

The used silver screw was spat into the air and landed in the boy’s left eye – and he screamed in agony. But medics who treated the boy at 7am this morning said the screw had miraculously missed the cornea and retina.

X-rays show how deeply the screw had ripped through the eyeball, only just stopping at entrance to the skull. Doctors performed successful surgery to remove the screw and by 11am today the boy was recovering on the ward at the Eye Care By Tuss clinic.

A freak accident left the screw impaled in the boy’s eye

Ophthalmologist Tat Sanguansak said staff will check the wound over the coming days but they are confident the boy will be able to see again.

He added: ‘Fortunately, the screw struck his eyeball but did not go into the lens, which thankfully has spared his sight. ‘However, due to the accident his eye bled badly and now is still bloodshot so there will be follow up treatment to help the boy see again.

‘We’re pleased with the outcome of the surgery. If the screw had been slightly to the left he would have been blinded.’
