Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left The Firm over 'royal pecking order', Royal expert claims

The strict 'pecking order' of the Royal Family and the way it's not based on popularity was a huge factor in Meghan and Harry leaving for the US, a leading royal expert has claimed.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle found it "difficult to accept" the royal 'pecking order' before moving to California to start a new life, an expert has claimed.

It's said they stepped down as senior members of the royal family as their influence within The Firm was based on their position and not their popularity.

But they were not the first in history to feel this way, Andrew Morton has said.

Mr Morton, the famous author of 1992 bestseller 'Diana: Her True Story', made the intriguing comparison between the Sussexes and Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon and Lord Snowdon while speaking to Express.co.uk.

Queen Elizabeth II's sister Margaret became known as a 'black sheep' in The Firm for her wild partying in the 1950s and 1960s and scandalous engagement to divorcee Peter Townsend, who she eventually left for photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones.

The royal couple had a son, David, and a daughter, Sarah, before divorcing in 1978.

Discussing Harry and Meghan's current popularity, Mr Morton wrote: "They are courted by famous people.

Harry moved to the US with wife Meghan Markle in March last year

"I mean, thousands of people turned out to see them [in New York, during their visit in September].

"They are popular and what they found difficult to accept was that inside the Royal Family it's not about popularity, it's about the position.

He claimed that they didn't "get the funding they wanted" or "the support they wanted" from The Firm because they were both "lower down the totem pole".

He added: "It's exactly the same as what happened with Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon.

"They were the glamorous faces of the Swinging Sixties but inside the Royal Family they were lower down... the Queen Mother, the Queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles, Princess Anne... they were all part of the main branch of the Royal Family, unlike Margaret and Snowdon.

"It's a remarkable parallel that Meghan and Harry are the same way."

Last week, royal podcaster and commentator Gertrude Daly claimed that the Sussexes would only change their plans and engagements over in the United States and come back to the UK if someone in the Royal Family died.
