Heartbreaking six words Princess Catherine told her children after cancer diagnosis

Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, has revealed the emotional way she shared her cancer diagnosis with her children. Traces of cancer were discovered after the 42-year-old underwent tests following her 'successful abdominal surgery' in January.

She's now undergoing 'a course of preventative chemotherapy'. Kate shared how the sad news of her cancer diagnosis came as a shock to her family, reports MirrorOnline.

And she's revealed the heartbreaking words chosen to tell Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, who are her three children. Over the last few months, the mother-of-three has taken time out of the public eye so she can recover from her major operation and start her preventative treatment for cancer.

It's also taken time for the princess, alongside Prince William, to break the news to their children gently, Kate explained. She has reassured them: "I am going to be ok."

In her statement, Kate said: "As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment. But, most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be ok."

The princess continued: "As I have said to them; I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits. Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance too. As is the love, support and kindness that has been shown by so many of you. It means so much to us both."

Kate asked for the public and media to respect her family's privacy as she navigates her road to recovery. She added: "We hope that you will understand that, as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment. My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery."

In the official statement released on Friday, March 22, Kate took the opportunity to thank the public for their 'wonderful messages and support' and credited her 'fantastic medical team'. She finished with: "At this time, I am also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer. For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone."

The devastating news comes after a tough few months for the Royal Family. Following Kate's abdominal surgery in January, King Charles also announced he had been diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing treatment. On Mother's Day, Kate made headlines after social media detectives spotted numerous signs the royal's official Mother's Day portrait had been 'manipulated'.

It was the first official photo of Kate since her surgery and showed her smiling with her children. A 'kill notice' was issued to media organisations around the world to retract the photo, and Kate issued an apology where she said she experimented with 'editing' as an 'amateur photographer'. The princess apologised for 'any confusion'. A week later, hospital bosses launched a probe into claims Kate's confidentiality was breached at the London clinic.

At least one member of staff was said to have been caught trying to access the future Queen's private medical records during her 13-night stay in the hospital. On Saturday, Kate was seen out and about in public for the first time since January. Footage captured by a customer showed Kate and Will at the Windsor Farm Shop, which sparked wild conspiracy theories and speculation about her whereabouts and health status.
