Shakira blamed her ex-boyfriend Gerard Piqué 'for dragging her down' while discussing why it took so long to make her new album on Monday's episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on NBC.
The 47-year-old Colombian singer shared her thoughts when Jimmy, 49, asked her why it had been more than seven years since she put out a record.
'I was putting out songs here and there but it was really hard for me to put together a body of work,' Shakira said. 'It was the husband. Now I'm husband-less. Yeah, the husband was dragging me down. Now I'm free. Now I can actually work.'
Shakira appeared on the show to promote her new album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran.
'Women no longer cry,' Shakira said. 'It's men's turn now.'

'For too long we have been sent to cry with a script in our hands and without an end just because we are women,' Shakira said. 'We have to conceal our pain in front of our kids, in front of society. We have to heal in a certain way. And I don't think anyone is supposed to tell us how to heal. No one is supposed to tell a She-wolf how to lick her wounds.'
Shakira said now women decide for themselves how to cope with the hardships of life.
Shakira explained her feelings that inspired her to create the 16-tracks of the album.
'I was raw,' Shakira said. 'I was dealing with a lot of stuff. I felt at times with a knife between my teeth. I was picking up the pieces of myself from the floor. I was trying to rebuild myself. Music was the glue.'
Shakira said she felt that she was 'transforming pain and anger and frustration into creativity and productivity and resilience.' She said that was why she picked the metaphor of the precious stones.
The Spanish soccer player and Shakira announced their split after 11 years together in June 2022, after she learnt he had allegedly been unfaithful.
Gerard, 37, is now dating model girlfriend Clara Chia Marti, 25, after she moved into the home he used to share with the singer last August.
Shakira said she met Cardi B in Paris during fashion week and felt that her album needed a dose of her powerful strength. Shakira said she reached out and Cardi said yes.

Jimmy asked her if she was going on tour.
'That's what I'd like,' Shakira said.
Shakira also told people to follow her on social media because Tuesday there was going to be something happening in New York, but that she couldn't say more.
Later in the show, Shakira dressed in white performed one of her new songs from the album with her dancers.
Before she came out, Jimmy attached a polygraph to Shakira's hips.
'They are telling the truth,' Drew Barrymore said.
'Hips don't lie,' Jimmy said.
