The secret meaning behind Meghan Markle’s new lifestyle brand’s name

The Duchess of Sussex has announced her new lifestyle brand with a glitzy Instagram account and a beautiful promotional video - but what exactly does the name, American Riviera Orchard, mean?

Meghan Markle launched the label, which is believed to be a lifestyle, cookery and homeware brand, on social media this evening. And while it may not be immediately apparent what the name of the brand represents, it does have a personal tie to the Duchess.

The area of California in which she and Prince Harry live, Montecito, is also called the ‘American Riviera’. Santa Barbara is sometimes referred to as ‘The American Riviera’, likely because the geography and climate are similar to that of areas along the northern Mediterranean Sea coast, which is more traditionally known as the Riviera.

The decision behind combining the phrase with the ‘Orchard’ for the name of the brand is yet to be seen. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry previously launched their brand, Archewell, after leaving the royal family in March 2020. The reason behind the name at the time was described as a combination fo the Greek word in the project ‘arche’ - meaning source of action – with ‘well’ - meaning a deep resource for life.

In a clip shared on the newly-launched account on social media this evening, the Duchess of Sussex can be seen walking through her Montecito mansion in a black ball-gown, as well as cooking in her home kitchen.

Sources told PageSix.com the new brand, which comes six years after Meghan closed her lifestyle blog The Tig to join the royal family, focus on home, garden, food and general lifestyle wares.

Insiders claimed Meghan has been ‘working on this for over a year’, adding, 'It’s all the things that are close to her heart — all the things she’s passionate about.’
