Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been slammed for their "steely determination" to make money.
The Duchess of Sussex recently launched her wellness brand American Riviera Orchard. It comes after the pair previously raked in lucrative deals with the likes of Netflix and Spotify, causing a stir with bombshell claims in documentaries and memoirs released since they quit the Royal Family in 2020.
Speaking to GB News, royal author Alexander Larman compared the duo to American socialite Wallis Simpson and husband King Edward, claiming the pair are a "modern-day version" of the controversial couple whose marriage saw Edward abdicate from the throne.
Larman said the Duke of Sussex has the same "haplessness" as the former Duke of Windsor while Meghan's "steely determination" was similar to divorcee Simpson. "I think they are very, very lucky to find each other because they've made two people miserable rather than four, he said.
He added: "Ever since Harry published his memoir, Spare, which was a ridiculous book, there's no sense whatsoever that they are a serious couple.
"I was looking at the American Riviera Orchard revelation the other day and I thought Wallis Simpson, who was obviously Meghan's spiritual forebear, would have done her own lifestyle brand – but with quite so crass a title? I don't think so."
Meghan's new venture was launched on Instagram earlier this year. A promotional video depicted glamorous shots of her cooking in her kitchen at home.
But the brand was slammed thanks to the poor timing of the launch, which came shortly before news of Kate Middleton's cancer diagnosis. Lisa “Kennedy” Montgomery wrote for MailOnline: "Even Meghan, never afraid to stick her LA oar where it's not wanted, must surely know that any product releases of balsamic fig dip or grievance-scented smelling sticks would now leave her looking like a veritably unsympathetic Viscountess of Venom."
