When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tied the knot in 2018 it was a day of pure joy for the couple. However, it also appears the event was the last time Harry and his brother Prince William were happy in one another's company.
William was Harry's best man on the day and their brotherly unity at the wedding carries a sombre significance today, according to royal author Robert Hardman
“With the benefit of hindsight, we’re left feeling it was one of the last times they were happy in each other’s company,” he said. “You can’t help looking back and thinking what might have been, but at the time it all felt very relaxed and friendly.”
Harry and Meghan's unforgettable ceremony took place in St George’s Chapel on a bright and sunny Saturday 19 May. Guests began to arrive at 9.30am, with the likes of Idris Elba, James Blunt, Oprah Winfrey, James Corden, Carey Mulligan, Tom Hardy, Sir Elton John, Serena Williams, the Beckhams, the Clooneys and Meghan’s Suits co-stars all taking their seats in the chapel.
Though the bride’s mother Doria Ragland was a guest of honour, it was announced two days before the wedding that Meghan’s father Thomas Markle would not attend on health grounds. Instead, Charles would walk Meghan part of the way down the aisle.
Harry, who had required the permission of Queen Elizabeth to keep his beard, arrived at the chapel with best man William just after 11.30am, both looking sharp in their Blues and Royals frock-coat uniforms.
As Meghan made her way into the chapel, she was closely followed by six bridesmaids and four page boys, including Prince George and Princess Charlotte, together with the children of close friends.
As Harry and Meghan exchanged vows and said, “I will”, loud cheers could be heard from outside the chapel, causing the couple and the congregation to giggle
After being proclaimed husband and wife and signing the register, they delighted fans by sharing a kiss on the chapel steps.
