Ben Affleck's 'mood swings' were reportedly part of the reason he and Jennifer Lopez split.

The Golden Globe winner, 52 — who 'has a darkness to him' — drove a wedge in his relationship with the Let's Get Loud singer with his uncontrollable 'highs' and 'lows', a source close to the ex couple claimed to PEOPLE on Saturday.

He and the New York native filed for divorce on August 20, which also happened to be their second wedding anniversary.

'The truth is there was a great deal of love but also unfortunately what became clear were Ben's erratic mood swings that he couldn't hide from the press, as much as he tried to,' the insider dished.

'You could see the erratic behavior, the giant mood swings,' the source added, explaining that he can go from 'being incredibly happy and warm — the best light that emanated from him' to exposing 'his deepest, darkest behavior.'

They alleged that the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice actor tried to hide his unbalanced behavior from the public. 

The insider added, 'I think he was signaling a message to the press. But yet participating.'

Making the decision to go their separate ways again wasn't easy because the two still have lingering feelings for each other.

'They were trying to work through it, but when the mood swings and the big highs and big lows informed a toxicity that was pervasive, no one can help you — you have to help yourself,' the source added.

'But I would not be so bold to say there isn't love — of course there is,' the source admitted. 'The world was rooting for them, but who he said he was and who he turned out to be were two different people.'
