First picture of ‘caring’ mobility scooter rider, Jade Anthony Barnett, 38, stàbbed to death on busy London street

A man in a mobility scooter who was stabbed to death in East London yesterday afternoon has been pictured.

Jade Anthony Barnett, 38, ‘tried to get away’ from the attackers but was stuck in his wheelchair and died at the scene.

Mr Barnett, described by a local butcher as a ‘good boy’, was found with a stab injury on Rushmore Road, a residential area of Lower Clapton.

His sister Simone Barnett described him as a ‘cheerful and caring’ man.

Ms Barnett, 45, from Hackney, explained that her brother had lived in Clapton with his mother, but his friends said he had moved to the Stratford area.

She said: ‘He comes around here [Clapton] all the time, everyone knew my brother – young, old, mothers, fathers, everybody knew my brother,’ she said.

‘Everybody is family, he’s just that character.’

Jade’s mum Joyce Barnett told the Evening Standard: ‘He was loved by everyone around here.

‘He was a joy, he loved life. He wouldn’t hurt a fly and would never get involved in a fight.

‘How anyone could attack him in a wheelchair I don’t know. We want answers.’

Mr Barnett’s friends say he lost his leg in a motorcycle accident in 2007.

On Wednesday evening, a black and grey electric wheelchair could be seen behind the police cordon close to a forensics tent at the scene.

Video shared on social media claimed the man was stabbed with a machete, but this has not been confirmed by police.

Two men aged 21 and 28 have been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Officers had been called to reports of a fight at 3.38pm.

A police spokesperson said: ‘Police were called at 15:38hrs on Wednesday, August 28, to reports of a fight in Rushmore Road, E5. 

‘Officers, the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance attended and found a man, aged in his 30s, suffering a stab injury.

‘Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

‘His next of kin will be informed. Two males (no further details at this time) have been arrested. Enquiries remain ongoing.’
