Emilia Pérez is a musical, comedy and drama all rolled into one. It's received a record-breaking 13 Oscar nominations, the most ever for a film not in the English language, including Best Directing, Best Music and Best Actress in a Supporting Role. The film centres on a Mexican cartel leader, played by Karla Sofía Gascón, who enlists the help of a lawyer, portrayed by Zoe Saldaña, to assist her in disappearing and transitioning into a woman. Do you remember when those pictures first surfaced of Timothée Chalamet dressed as Bob Dylan? It sent the internet into a meltdown, and now the film is finally here. The highly anticipated Bob Dylan biopic, set in the 1960s, follows a 19-year-old Dylan as he arrives in New York with his guitar and bags of talent. As he forms some of his most personal relationships during his meteoric rise to fame, the musician becomes disillusioned with the folk movement, ultimately making a controversial decision that sends shockwaves around the globe.

A Complete Unknown is available to watch in cinemas.

Conclave

Conclave is one of those edge-of-your-seat, hold-your-breath type of films. This relentless political thriller stars Ralph Fiennes (you know, Voldemort) alongside industry heavyweights like Isabella Rossellini, Stanley Tucci and John Lithgow. The story follows Cardinal Lawrence (Fiennes) as he finds himself caught up in one of the most mysterious and time-honoured rituals in the world—the election of a new pope. As he navigates the sacred corridors of the Vatican alongside influential figures of the Church, he begins to unravel a web of hidden truths that could potentially rock the core of Catholicism itself.

Conclave is available to rent or buy on Apple TV+

Colson Whitehead's 2019 novel has been adapted into an emotionally powerful and unsettling film, directed by RaMell Ross and starring Brandon Wilson (who you might recognise from Ben Affleck's 2020 film The Way Back) and Ethan Herisse, who is the breakout star of this film. The film centres on two African-American boys, Elwood (Herisse) and Turner (Wilson), who are sent to a brutal reform school in 1960s Jim Crow Florida. Drawing inspiration from the infamous Dozier School for Boys, a now-defunct institution known for its cruel treatment of its students, the story sheds light on the harsh realities these boys faced.

Nickel Boys is available to watch in cinemas.

I'm Still Here

After her mother, Fernanda Torres is only the second Brazilian actress in history to be nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars. To say her nomination has sent the internet into a frenzy would be an understatement. Her fanbase is huge, and the film that has secured her the historical nomination is I'm Still Here. Torres stars as Eunice Paiva, a mother and activist who embarks on a solitary struggle to uncover the truth behind the disappearance of her husband, all while striving to hold her family together. The film centres on the theme of resilience, as Paiva navigates a painful search for answers amid the turmoil of her personal life.

The Substance

The Substance is undoubtedly one of the most talked about films of 2024. It spawned countless memes thanks to its grotesque and - at times - vomit-inducing surrealism. It's wild and iconic, but also addresses very real and important themes of sexism, ageism, self-worth and the pressure to maintain societal beauty standards.

It's a body horror film (so be warned) that follows a once-celebrated star (played by Demi Moore) who turns to a black-market drug: a cell-replicating formula that temporarily transforms her into a younger, more radiant version of herself (played by Margaret Qualley). With a blend of suspense and emotional depth, The Substance takes a hard look at society’s obsession with beauty and age, and the lengths one woman will go to in order to recapture her former glory.

The Substance is available to stream on Mubi and available to rent on Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime Video

Dune: Part Two

Timothée Chalamet seems to be everywhere at the moment. From that lookalike contest to starring in not one but two of the films that have been nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars in 2025. Dune: Part Two is touted as an “epic space opera film” (at nearly three hours, epic is right) and stars Chalamet alongside fellow Gen Z heartthrob Austin Butler, with Florence Pugh and Zendaya completing the all-star cast.

The second instalment of this science fiction blockbuster follows Paul Atreides (played by Chalamet) as he joins forces with Chani (played by Zendaya) and the Fremen as he sets out to avenge those who shattered his family. Torn between his deep love for Chani and the weighty responsibility of saving the universe, Paul must navigate a future only he can see, where the stakes are higher than ever.

Wicked

If you haven't heard about Wicked, your screen time must be at zero. It's been one of the most highly anticipated and popular films of the past year, and is the second most-nominated film at this year's Oscars, with 10 nods. Starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, Wicked also features Bridgerton's Jonathan Bailey as Prince Fiyero and sets out to re-imagine the hugely successful musical of the same name. The story is a prequel to the Wizard of Oz and the 2024 film is just the first half of the story, with the rest scheduled for release this November.

Wicked is available to rent on Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime Video

Anora

Anora is a romantic comedy-drama starring Mikey Madison, who played Susan Atkins in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019) and Amber Freeman in the horror film Scream (2022). Madison plays the titular Anora, a Brooklyn native, who seems to have found her happily-ever-after when she marries the son of a wealthy oligarch. But when her marriage makes headlines in Russia, her dream life is suddenly at risk. Determined to stop the union, his powerful parents head to New York, intent on forcing an annulment.

Anora is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV+

The Brutalist

Adrien Brody has definitely found his niche playing Holocaust survivors. He became the youngest ever person to win Best Actor for his portrayal of WÅ‚adysÅ‚aw Szpilman in Roman Polanski's 2002 war drama The Pianist when he was 29-years-old. He's already won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in The Brutalist, and is up for his second Best Actor Oscar nod. The film itself is up for Best Picture, and it's easy to see why.

This epic period drama follows the story of László Toth, a visionary architect who flees post-war Europe and arrives in America with hopes of starting fresh—rebuilding both his career and his fractured marriage. Alone in an unfamiliar land, he settles in Pennsylvania, where a wealthy industrialist sees potential in his work and offers him a chance to rise again.
