Prince Harry and Princess Kate once had a very strong bond and close relationship, with the Duke of Sussex even saying that Catherine was the sister he had always wanted.
Harry, Catherine, and William were quickly dubbed the Fab Three when the Prince and Princess of Wales became engaged, with the trio then heading out on several engagements together. When William and Catherine became engaged, Harry even famously gushed: "I am delighted my brother has popped the question. It means I get a sister, which I have always wanted."
In 2011, after William proposed, Harry also said that he would take Kate under his wing, "or she'll be taking me under her wing probably", he cheekily quipped at the time. And then the following February in 2012, Prince William broke tradition and asked his brother, to be his "best man" at the Royal Wedding that would take place later that year.
The trio then became famed for carrying out official royal duties together, attending engagements, and going on trips overseas together. And in 2016, when Harry was in the army, he was even reported to have visited William and Kate in Anglesey.
According to MailOnline, "A 'strong, sisterly bond was cemented with the at-times lonely Harry," said a source. With it also claimed that Kate was a bit like a "mother figure" to the now-Duke.
It was also reported that the pair had a "genuine friendship", with Catherine and Harry bonding over Game of Thrones and watching the hit show in each other's company. The Princess of Wales is reported to have given Harry cookery lessons and "sensible romantic advice".
MailOnline previously quoted a royal insider saying: "Kate has quite a different relationship with Harry than she has with William. 'Harry appeals to her sillier side because he is carefree, footloose and loves banter. He finds things funny about people and says so."
But things shifted in 2016 when Prince Harry met Meghan Markle and the pair struck up a romantic relationship. According to the bombshell book about the Sussexes, titled Finding Freedom, the rift began when William "p*ssed Harry off" when he referred to Meghan as "this girl".
William is alleged to have told his younger brother: "Don't feel you need to rush this. Take as much time as you need to get to know this girl"
Authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand penned of the alleged words of advice: "In those last two words 'this girl' Harry heard the tone of the snobbishness that was anathema to his approach to the world.
"During his 10-year career in the military, outside the royal bubble, he had learnt not to make snap judgements of people based on their accent, education, ethnicity class or profession.
"Harry was p****d off… that his brother would ask such a thing."
Another contributing factor to the rift could have even happened when Meghan first met the now-Waleses. In the couple's Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, the couple revealed how Meghan was first introduced to William and Kate.
"Even when Will and Kate came over and I was meeting her for the first time I remember I was in ripped jeans, I was barefoot. Like I was a hugger, I have always been a hugger I didn't realise that is really jarring for a lot of Brits," Meghan admitted in the docuseries.
Cracks in Harry and Kate's relationship then started to appear ahead of the Sussexes' wedding. This came amid reports of a tearful row at a bridesmaids fitting. At the time, sources claimed Meghan had made Kate cry, but claims later emerged suggesting it was the other way around.
And since the bombshells emerged, Kate and Harry's relationship has never been the same. The Duke of Sussex now resides in Montecito, California with his wife and two children, while the Waleses remain in the UK with their three children. The two young families are said to remain estranged and not in contact.
