Prince William and Harry 'stopped talking years before Megxit'

A royal biographer claims Prince Harry and William actually fell out over a decade before Meghan Markle joined the family.

The warring brothers have had a frosty relationship in recent years, with their sibling rivalry hitting the headlines following Harry and Meghan's exit from the Royal Family in 2020. As the couple stepped down as senior royals and relocated to the US, Harry told Oprah Winfrey in a bombshell interview that he and William were on 'different paths'.

Afterwards, Harry claimed in his memoir Spare that he and his brother had a physical altercation at Frogmore Cottage over the former Suits star's behaviour. The Duke of Sussex claimed William 'lunged' at him and 'grabbed' his shirt during the confrontation. But, despite their fraught friendship in recent times, royal biographer Robert Lacey says the 'feud' started long before.

In his book Battle of Brothers, Lacey claimed the backlash from Harry's infamous Nazi soldier costume fancy dress party in 2005 caused "quite a serious rift between the brothers at the time". Harry was snapped wearing a red-and-black swastika armband at a friend's get-together and issued a public apology.

Lacey wrote: "Meghan was not the original factor in Prince Harry's decision to get shot of his family. In January 2005, following the 'Colonials and Natives' costume fiasco, we now know that Prince Harry was drawn to re-evaluate his elder brother's involvement and the unfairness of William's emergence smelling of roses."

Harry later spoke out about the incident in his Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, saying: "It was probably one of the biggest mistakes of my life. I felt so ashamed afterwards."

Speaking about his father, Charles, packing him off to be lectured, Harry continued: "All I wanted to do was make it right. I sat down and spoke to the Chief Rabbi in London, which had a profound impact on me. I went to Berlin and spoke to a Holocaust survivor. I could have just ignored it and gone on and made the same mistakes over and over again in my life. But I learned from that."

Lacey claimed the incident had a huge impact on Harry and William's brotherly relationship. He wrote: "It was the function of the elder brother to be perfect whether he truly was or was not and it was the function of the younger one to make the rest of us laugh or complain or feel disapproving – and at all events to make us feel thoroughly superior to the poor clueless kid. This was the role that all of us shaped for Prince Harry over the years."
