A royal expert has claimed Meghan Markle regards herself as "Diana's heir" and is "trying to cash in" on deceased the Princess' legacy.
The Duchess of Sussex announced her California-inspired lifestyle brand American Riviera Orchard on March 14. A lifestyle and wellness platform, the new venture sees Meghan vending a range of homeware products such as crockery and jams.
Despite appearing as an innocent business venture for the 42-year-old, many have pointed fingers at the contentious date of the brand reveal. March 14, 2023, marked a quarter-century of The Diana Award Ceremony, which took place virtually this year.
Expert on the Royal Family Tom Quinn told The Mirror that he didn't think this was a coincidence: “It’s really significant that Meghan‘s new American Riviera Orchard brand was launched on the same date as the Diana award – Meghan has always seen herself as Diana’s heir.
"She sees herself as suffering because of the media, just as she feels Diana suffered, but on this side of the pond at least, there will be a huge amount of criticism that she is just trying to cash in on Diana’s legacy.” Quinn went to add that Kensington Palace "groaned" over the faux pas, while Meghan “just cannot understand” the issue of using her “connections”.
On the same day as Meghan's brand released the teaser video, both Prince William and Prince Harry paid tribute to their mother at the charity's ceremony. William attended in-person, giving a passionate speech at London's Science Museum.
The Prince of Wales said: "This evening’s Legacy Award is particularly special as it marks the 25th anniversary year of The Diana Award, a charity set up to reflect my mother’s belief that young people can change the world. I know that she would have been honoured to see a charity in her name doing such inspirational work to uplift young people from all corners of the globe.
"She taught me that everyone has the potential to give something back, that everyone in need deserves a supporting hand in life." Brother Harry, however, did not attend in-person, instead opting to join via video call.
The Duke of Sussex praised the foundation for "protecting his mother's legacy" in an equally emotional speech. The 39-year-old said: “My mum would be incredibly proud of all of the work that you’ve done, I'm incredibly proud and thank you for doing everything that you do.
“The impact that you're having on hundreds, thousands, millions of people, without you guys doing that and without you inspiring other young people to do the same thing because it feels good because it's the right thing to do, but you also get so much from it, that inspiration is like this ripple effect that goes across the water. Every single day that you're working on these things you don't even know the impact that it's making."
Harry referenced his absence, adding: "I’m sorry I can’t be there. I wish I could be there with you guys.”
A whopping six figures is predicted for the first week of American Riviera Orchard's sales. The Duchess of Sussex is reportedly hoping to create her own cosmetics line and branch out internationally with lines of haircare products, pet care, and home fragrances.
